Julia A. Flagg is interested in interdisciplinary research and teaching around questions of global environmental change. Professor Flagg holds a bachelor of arts degree from The College of New Jersey, as well as a master's degree and a doctorate from Rutgers University. Before coming to Connecticut College, she completed a post-doctoral research fellowship in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Connecticut.
In her research, Flagg has investigated the conditions under which certain nations made pledges to produce zero net carbon emissions. This research was published in Environmental Sociology and highlighted in Nature Climate Change. While at the University of Connecticut, she developed an interest in climate information use in the water sector and water quality violations. This research has been published in Climate Risk Management and Water Resources Management, respectively. She also conducted a case study on the process by which Costa Rica adopted its carbon neutral pledge. This research appears in Sustainability and Human Ecology Review. She is currently working on an expanded project on Costa Rica’s climate mitigation policies. In some of her other research, she explored environmental inequalities in disaster-affected communities, specifically those affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy.
Professor Flagg teaches in the Department of Sociology and the Environmental Studies Program. Dr. Flagg also brings a deep commitment to interdisciplinary teaching to Connecticut College. She enjoys regularly teaching Environmental Studies as a Social Science, a Conn Course called Climate & Society, Sociology of the Environment, and a seminar on Disasters. Before joining the Conn community, she had the chance to teach as part of the Second Chance Pell Grant Program. Working with colleagues at Asnuntuck Community College, Flagg taught a course on structural inequalities in the U.S. in two correctional institutions in Connecticut.
