13 seniors named Winthrop Scholars

Continuing a tradition that dates back to 1928, Connecticut College has selected 13 seniors to be honored as Winthrop Scholars.

The designation of Winthrop Scholar is the highest academic honor bestowed by the College. Reserved for students who demonstrate exceptional scholarship, the honor is named for John Winthrop the Younger, who founded the city of New London and served as governor of Connecticut.

Winthrop Scholars are also the first members of their class selected for membership in Phi Beta Kappa, the national honor society of undergraduate higher education.

“As Winthrop Scholars, you’ve succeeded not only at absorbing information and applying it, but also in orienting yourselves toward new ways of asking questions, new ways of looking at the world to better understand its problems and complexities,” Assistant Professor of Philosophy Lindsay Crawford told the scholars in a special electronic message of congratulations. “This new orientation, more than anything else, will be what guides you going forward as you encounter the many things in life that will call out to you for your attention and engagement.”

The impressive group includes a 2019 Critical Language Scholarship winner, a dancer who has performed at the Kennedy Center, four varsity athletes, an entrepreneur, and—for the first time in Conn’s history—not one, but two sets of twins.
