Maggie Shea ’11 makes Olympic sailing team
The team that will represent the United States in sailing at this summer's Tokyo Olympics is set—and the 13-member squad features a Camel.
Maggie Shea ’11 will make her Olympic debut in the 49er FX with her skipper Stephanie Roble. The pair, who have been sailing together since 2016, earned bronze in 49er FX at last year's 49er World Championships in Australia, silver at the 2019 Pan American Games in Peru and bronze at the 2019 Hempel World Cup Series in Italy.
Shea is a former All-American Honorable Mention (2009) at Conn. In 2011, she helped the Camels finish second at the Sperry Top-Sider/ICSA Women’s National Championship, after which she was named 2011 NEISA Sportswoman of the Year. Originally from Wilmette, Illinois, Shea studied government at Conn. She currently lives in Chicago.
"The combined strength and depth of our Tokyo 2020 nominees, of our larger national team and of our development program is key to our success this summer and beyond," said Paul Cayard, executive director of U.S. Olympic Sailing. "I’m excited to support this group of 13 talented athletes as they race in Enoshima."
Sailing competition spans a majority of the Games' total duration, beginning July 25, two days after the opening ceremony, and concluding Aug. 4, four days from the closing ceremony. Medal races are from July 31 to Aug. 4.
