Conn welcomes Class of 2028

As they arrived on the sunny morning of Aug. 21, Connecticut College’s 471 new students—including 458 first-years, 12 transfers and one RTC student—were greeted by cheering student leaders, colorful signs and a campus community eager to welcome the newest herd of Camels in Conn’s 113-year history.

The cohort was drawn to the College’s innovative curriculum, extensive career preparation, global focus, commitment to full participation, tradition of environmental stewardship and ample opportunities for collaboration with faculty. Members hail from 34 states and 22 countries, including Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Finland, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Slovakia and Uzbekistan. The Class of 2028 is also among the most diverse in the College’s history; 28% are domestic students of color and 16% are first-generation college students.

The first task for many on Arrival Day was to move into one of Conn’s 20 residence houses (students participating in one of the College’s three pre-orientation programs got a head start on the move-in process, arriving Aug. 19 or 20). In the afternoon, music filled the air before a New Student Welcome gathering on Tempel Green. Associate Dean of Campus Life Geoff Norbert and Dean of First-Year Students Emily Morash provided an overview of the orientation program and offered tips for success and words of encouragement.

After Norbert took his traditional selfie with the new class, he encouraged them to make the most of their experience as Camels. “Today, I am handing you a sopping wet sponge that is your Connecticut College experience,” he said. “You have four years to wring that thing completely dry. Find your passions, find the things that interest you in the classroom, have a ton of fun with your friends, get involved in student leadership, compete on the field or the court. And when I’m the last person you see before you walk over to get your degree, I want you to say, ‘Dean Norbert, it’s done. I did everything.’”

Like you, I am also starting my first year at Conn. Like you, I am unpacking, finding buildings and trying to get to know every member of this amazing community. And like you, I’m just starting to discover all the wonderful opportunities this great school and community have to offer.

President Andrea Chapdelaine

Late in the afternoon at the President’s Assembly, students and their families were addressed by President Andrea Chapdelaine, Dean of the College Erika Smith and Student Government Association President Bella Castellanos Palacios ’25.

Castellanos Palacios encouraged the new students to cherish their time as Camels. “Entering my fourth year, I can say I only continue to meet people who care about my well-being and accomplishments,” she said. “You will find yourself surrounded by those who will cheer you on, dream alongside you and create lifelong memories. Together, you will prosper and make this campus yours in your own unique ways.”

When Chapdelaine took the stage, she pointed out that she and the Class of 2028 have something in common. “Like you, I think many of you know, I am also starting my first year at Conn. Like you, I am unpacking, finding buildings and trying to get to know every member of this amazing community. And like you, I’m just starting to discover all the wonderful opportunities this great school and community have to offer.”

The president offered some advice to her fellow new arrivals. “First, a little self-affirmation never hurts anybody, so I tell myself, ‘You got this, girl,’” Chapdelaine shared. “Then I take a deep breath and I plunge in, meaning that I make sure I am meeting somebody new every day. I’m asking lots of questions—even if I think they’re probably going to think, ‘She should know this,’—and engaging with this community. … So, I ask you, let’s be brave together, take chances together, make epic mistakes and fail together, succeed together, learn, grow and have fun together. And one day, before you know it, you will have your Camel moment and say, as I will, ‘I do have this.’”

The Camel mascot looks on as new students gather on Tempel Green.

Over the next few days, the new students will learn more about the College’s signature Connections program, meet with their advisers, register for classes and begin to form friendships that, for many, will last the rest of their lives. The extended Welcome Weekend will culminate Monday, Aug. 26, with the 110th Convocation, a celebration of the opening of the academic year. Associate Professor of Economics Mónika López-Anuarbe, winner of the 2024 John S. King Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, will deliver the keynote address, “The Courage of Caring.”
