Men’s Soccer heads to Sweet 16

The Connecticut College Men’s Soccer team scored twice in the first half and added a goal in the second to propel the Camels past No. 19 Franklin and Marshall 3-0 in NCAA Tournament second-round action in front of an elated home crowd on Conn’s Freeman Field Sunday afternoon. With the win, Conn (12-2-6) now heads to the Sweet 16 round for the fourth time in five seasons. The Camels will play Kenyon at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Matt Scoffone ’25 found the back of the net just 13 minutes into the rematch of last year’s second-round matchup. Elliot Spatz ’26 scored the second goal just before halftime, and Gavin Vanden Berg ’26 added the third at 57:46. Goalie Peter Silvester ’25 recorded five saves in 84 minutes of play; TJ Krongard ’26 closed out the contest with two saves.

In the first round on Saturday, also on Freeman Field, Conn defeated Suffolk University 4-1. In that contest, Scoffone scored just five minutes into the match to give the Camels an early lead. Spatz added the second goal at 32:18 to put Conn up 2-0 at the half. Marco Perugini ’27 fired a shot in off the far post to make it 3-0 at 52:00, and Jorge Mendo ’25 tallied Conn’s fourth goal at 82:19. The Rams got a late consolation goal at 84:24.

The Camels, who won the NESCAC Championship earlier this month and have scored 10 goals over the last three games while allowing only two, will look to continue their post-season run this weekend.

“Just like anything in life, the more you’re under pressure, the more you become used to it,” Head Coach Reuben Burk told The Day. “It’s not a culture where guys finger-point. It’s a culture where everyone sticks together and trusts each other through the hard times.”
